Edmundston's Jean-Guy Poitras' commitment to the sport of badminton began in 1972. Since that time he has officiated at over 600 international matches including the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, seven world championships, four world team championships, the Commonwealth and Pan-American Games. Then there are the countless local, provincial and national events including five Canada Games.
He is currently the president of the Canadian and PanAm Continent officials associations and vice-president of Badminton Canada. He is one of only five officials' evaluators in the world, and chairs the International Badminton Federation assessment panel.
He has been selected as provincial (2002) and national (1997) official of the year, and in 2005 was awarded the prestigious Fox 40 Kitch MacPherson Award of Excellence for his national and international contributions to badminton.
Professor, athletic director, prolific author, historian, consultant, -his influence on behalf of sport is both wide-spread and profound.
Enrolled in the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame, June 3rd, 2006.
